The Car Connection wrote: "The 2018 Ford Escape does its best to deny its company's sterling truck credentials. It's a crossover SUV in mission, but the Escape wants to be driven like a sporty hatchback. … Today's model is handsome and pert, six years into its lifespan, and a new front end applied last year only made it better-looking."

Trim levels for the 2018 Escape are listed as S, SE, SEL and Titanium. All models get standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. The S trim is motivated by a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 168 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. Powering the SE and SEL trims is a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that develops 179 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. Finally, the Titanium is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates an inspiring 245 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trims, while the SE and SEL come with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Standard features for the S include cruise control, air conditioning, 17-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, a 60/40-split folding and reclining rear seat, a height-adjustable driver seat, a rearview camera, MyKey controls, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, the SYNC interface with AppLink, a 4.2-inch central display, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo system with a CD player and a USB port.

The SE features dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Available equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, the power liftgate and a nav system. (These options are also available in the upper trims.) Buyers can choose option packages that add even more features, like the Ford SYNC 3 system, blind spot monitoring, heated front seat and leather upholstery.

The SEL trim starts with the standard features found in the SE, and adds leather seats, the power liftgate, and the SYNC 3 setup. Many of the optional features of the SE are also available in the SEL, plus some driver assistance equipment.

Step up to the Titanium trim and you'll get most of the options of the lower trims as standard equipment. In addition, the Titanium gets a 10-speaker Sony audio system. An adaptive cruise control system that features pre-collision braking is optional. A heated steering wheel, lane keep assist and automatic parking are available as part of an option package.

Ford has a long history of engineering its vehicles with safety in mind. So, it's not surprising that the NSTSA awarded the 2018 Ford Escape with its highest score of five stars in overall crash testing.
